[Registration Open] HGPI Salon Special Edition “The 2024 U.S. Presidential Election’s Impact on Japan’s Healthcare Policies: Future Implications for U.S.-China Relations and U.S.-Japan Cooperation” (October 28, 2024)

The 2024 U.S. Presidential Election is a critical event that will significantly impact global politics, economics, and security. For Japan, understanding the future implications of U.S. political trends is crucial, as they directly affect economic and security policies, including healthcare. In this HGPI Salon Special Edition, we are pleased to welcome Amb. Kurt Tong, Managing Partner of The Asia Group and a former U.S. State Department diplomat with over 30 years of experience. Amb. Tong will provide expert insights into how the outcomes of the U.S. Presidential Election could impact Japan’s healthcare policies and business landscape.

Amidst the current state of turbulence in American politics, this seminar will consider potential outcomes under a second Trump administration or a Harris administration. It will also introduce expected policy trends and potential lineups for the respective administrations’ Cabinet and delve into the election’s impact on U.S.-Japan relations.

Additionally, as the BIOSECURE Act is being debated in the U.S. Congress, this event will also explore how a new administration’s China policy will impact Japan’s medical and healthcare landscape. Currently, the U.S. and China maintain a “quasi-Cold War” state, characterized by economic interdependence and military caution. Should the U.S. maintain a hardline approach towards China, increased restrictions on market access and technology transfers could have ripple effects on Japan’s healthcare industry. On the other hand, a more cooperative U.S.-China stance could foster a more stable economic environment beneficial to Japan.

In the context of U.S.-Japan relations, deeper collaboration in economic and health security is increasingly vital. Strengthening ties with the U.S. presents Japan with crucial opportunities to promote innovation in its healthcare policies and reduce barriers to market entry. Moreover, minimizing trade friction and enhancing policy dialogue between the U.S. and Japan are key to providing a stable environment for the healthcare business.

This HGPI Salon Special Edition will address these complex international dynamics and discuss how Japan can strategically respond to U.S. political shifts to fortify its economic and healthcare policies. Leveraging Amb. Kurt Tong’s extensive experience and insights, the seminar aims to provide valuable guidance for strategic planning in Japan’s healthcare policy and industry sectors.
